Hello, I have joined up due to the fact that Google always refers me to this forum whenever I type in a query... One question I would like to ask is about the stage that I am at... I am not currently satisfified with the already shaped X bracing I have got for my guitar top; I want to order some blanks.. In the meantime, whilst I wait, I want to start bracing the back. Is it possible for me to glue the back braces on, and let it sit, for example a couple of weeks or so at the most? I intend to glue the braced top on first, when I have recieved the brace blanks. Then the guitar back.. I guess you can say I am being impatient!! I would appreciate some thought on this. |

Hi Sam, Welcome to the OLF! Were happy to have ya! I can see no problems with you moving on and bracing your back, I have done that as far as 6 months in advance. By the way, where are you getting your brace stock? Lance |

Great stuff!! Thanks!! I am planning to get my brace stock from Craft Supplies. For I live in the UK... If they haven't got anything in stock, it probably will be Luthier's Mercentile Thanks for your reply. I'm gonna get going with it tonight. :) |

Sam you best bet for brace stock in the UK is probably Touchstone Tonewoods. If you send me a PM I am sure I can help you out. If you are on;y after a small amount. Russell |

That's another yes for Touchstone Tonewoods, they have a website with their catalogue, but you will have to phone them to order it, they are very helpful and their bracestock is usually well quartered and straight. Welcome to the forum by the way, we need more Brits. Colin |

[/QUOTE] Hello and Welcome Sam. I would agree with what Lance said BUT ONLY if you are going to keep the braced back in a controlled humidity environment beteen 40-50% hunidity. If not be prepared to watch the awesome forces of nature and thin wood and see it go from concave to convex - and if you are very lucky, back again. Don't ask me how I know this. Northern Ireland may have great luthiers but not a great stable humidity environment. If you are going to do this I would recommend that you don't carve the back braces until you are ready to glue the back to the rim set. 
I try and keep the period of bracing the top/back to closing the box as short as possible. |

I think it's Mario here that says, brace the plates just before installing them on the rims, for just this reason. I have to say that I agree, with Dave and with Mario. If you haven't already go and have a look at Mario Proulx's website he details a complete build there. Colin |
